In September of 2007 Chris Zacharius and three other divers recovered a single engine plane from the restricted dive waters of the Silver Banks between the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands. It was loaded with valuables that had belonged to the dictator Rafael Trujillo. In 1961 Trujillo could feel the hot breath of his countrymen on his back and knowing the end was near, he was moving his assets to a nearby island. This was a valuable find for Chris and his fellow divers Mit Kruger, Gretchen Viertbauer, and Angel Dominguez. They quickly found that this discovery was small compared to a three billion treasure hidden somewhere in the Dominican Republic. The quest for this huge fortune takes the group to the mountains of the Dominican Republic, to Haiti during a rebel war, and to a cave to rescue one of their group kidnapped by an army of drug smugglers led by Jon Jon Vieux who practices the evil version of voodoo. The story is an epic adventure that is fun, sexy, explosive, and blends historical facts into legendary fiction.

Once Upon a Reef edition by Chap Harper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Once Upon a Reef is an action-filled treasure hunter's dream, filled with vibrant and humorous characters who have embarked upon a quest together to find one of the greatest treasures to have been lost in history's many obscure pages. The book is certainly for an adult audience, and it's quite clear that the main characters always keep plenty of time on reserve for some of risque interaction, but it also takes the reader on a thrilling adventure that is far too tempting to pass up.
What I loved about this story were the many plots and sub-plots that were uncovered, along with the main character's abilities in putting together loosely bound scraps of information to form a somewhat accurate picture of decades-old-events so they can trace the location of the treasure to its final (or at least most recent) resting place. This story reminded me just a bit of a hybrid Indiana Jones mixed with Miami Vice. There are government plots, secret police intrigues, aspiring political leaders, an angry voodoo-priest druglord, and plenty of action between these parties to keep everything more than a little interesting.
What I could have done without was the fact that the main characters seemed to view everything through a hyper-sexual lense, which made it a little difficult to gloss over the adult areas and just read the story progression. I love a good adventure, but I typically try to steer clear of this kind of content. When the theme is this pervasive, however, it's simply unavoidable. That being said, the book was very well written, the plot was good, and the story moved along fairly well, so my single complaint doesn't stand up well against the many good things that this one has going for it.
I'm glad for having read Once Upon a Reef, and I happily give the book a 4 star rating with high hopes for more good reads to come from Chap Harper.
Thanks for the great read!

I was sent this book for my opinion on whether it would be adaptable for a motion picture, as I've been in the international film distribution business for 35 years and have co-executive produced several low budget movies. I found that not only could it and should it be adapted, but there are actually two motion pictures that could be produced from this one novel.
The first movie would cover the first third of the book when Chris and his band of treasure hunters search for a lost piper cub with millions in diamonds and cash lost at sea. This action-packed section of the novel has an exotic location--The Dominican Republic, beautiful women (I don't think the author had one average looking lady in the book--they were all "hot") chase scenes, dangerous dives, and really nasty people who want the kill for the treasure. For those of you who remember THE DEEP, starring Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset, and Robert Shaw, who can forget Jacqueline emerging from the ocean in that wet t-shirt? Well the women in this story do not leave anything to the imagination, and all can fire a gun and take care of themselves.
The remainder of the book really ratchets up the action, as Chris learns that there is 3.5 billion dollars in gold sunk offshore in a man-made reef. There are literally armies of men involved--those to protect and those to try and steal the gold. Included in the action are all types of boats, a submarine, along with naval ships and helicopters.
Certainly the first film could be shoot fairly economically, depending upon how much the producers can afford to pay their leading man. A good casting director would be able to find an actor that would work for less for the opportunity. This would be a perfect breakout film for a television actor who wants to do motion pictures. But I would recommend, if possible, to shoot both motion pictures back-to-back. All the main characters appear in both sections of the book, and most of the action is centered on the island. A number of scenes of both films would be able to be filmed in the same locations.
The appeal for these two motion pictures would not only be action fans, but especially for the many scuba divers around the world who have not had a good diving film to enjoy in some time. And who doesn't fantasize at finding treasure? An enjoyable book that should find its way to be a motion picture or two.
